East Fork Road follows the East Fork of the San Juan River upstream. It is a very scenic area. From the end of the plowed road (parking and trailhead) it follows the river for 8.5 miles before the turnoff to Elwood Pass and before the road crosses the river. So a 17-mile ride without extensive hill climbs is possible. If the grooming goes across the river, an additional 2.35 mile hill climb brings you to drop-deap gorgeous views of Quartz Meadow.
If you skate from the trailhead to the overlook of Quartz Meadow, you are looking at a 21.5 mile trip with a total ascent (all of the uphills added together) of 3500'. Elevation at the trailhead is 7715' and at the overlook is 9024'
This road is groomed by the Trailblazers Snowmobile Club and is also used by snowmobile riders. Quality of the the groomed surface depends on how recently it was groomed, the snow temperatures in the afternoons, and other factors (like the amount of snowmobile traffic). When conditions are good for skating, it can be a wonderful ride.
Please see the WEB site of the Colorado Snowmobile Association for updates on grooming status of the roads groomed by the Trailblazers Snowmobile Club.
